Chapter 3 Reflecting on What I Know
1. Why is it important to learn about different technology tools when they are constantly changing?
Technology tools will significantly aid students learning and comprehension. The use of technology in the classroom broadens students understanding simply by expanding their information. Computers and digital devices allow access at our fingertips to large amounts of information. Even though technology is ever changing, it still builds on itself. No matter if you are a master of a device and have high understanding how to use it, it will most likely change or improve and therefore the student will build on what they have previously learned.
It has been 13 years since I have been in college and I am amazed at how much organized information there is on the World Wide Web. These are my first online classes and it has been a fun challenge to navigate my way through them. In the 3 classes I have taken since back in school, I can tell I have a lot to learn in the world of new technology, and I am excited about the challenge!
2. Most desktop computers do the same things as mobile devices, so why do teachers need to use both?
Teachers need to have both desktop computers as well as mobile devices to effectively utilize computers in their classrooms. Although desktops are big and bulky, there are many advantages to having desktop. For teachers to implement group activities in their classrooms, it is easier to use a desktop because the screen is larger. Mobile devices are nice due to their small size and mobility. The small size is also a disadvantage because of they can easily be damaged, lost, or stolen. Mobile devices are also relatively expensive and are most likely to be replaces instead of repaired. The teacher can monitor the students use of a computer better than a small digital device and therefore having more control over their class.
3. How can the cost of digital devices be justified when the functions they preform are often limited in number and scope?
If students are to be knowledge rich in the 21st Century, they need to be well equipped to navigate the technology of the 21st Century. For a teacher to provide their students with a knowledge rich curriculum, he or she must incorporate these technologies into their planning. "Teachers and students often use mobile services for planning or recording audio and video files, taking photos, reading e-books, navigating to designated locations, graphing mathematical information, scheduling and organizing a project, and entering personal responses to questions that are displayed in the class" (p.67)

Computer use in the classroom only benefits the student's learning and core knowledge of the content being taught. Students use computers to "retrieve, evaluate, and manipulate real-world information to solve a meaningful problem' (p.4). Technology, when used as a tool, can increase student's overall understanding as well as promote a student-centered instruction. By increasing technology in the classroom students will be better prepared for their educational futures as well as their professional futures.
2. Can I still use tutorials and drill and practice software?
Tutorials and drill practice software can still be used in the classroom however, they do not promote high levels of learning for the student. These practices encourage more skill and drill approaches to learning rather than in-depth learning. "This approach to using technology and software is inconsistent with current reform initiatives, which focus on preparing students for the 21st. century.
3. Won't I have to spend a great deal of time to develop these units of instruction?
The national Education technology Standards for students (NETS-S) and the International Society for Technology in Education have teamed up to assist teachers with "integrating 21st Century knowledge and skills into their everyday teaching" (p.6). They give teaches profiles for technology in grades k-12. These profiles act as tools for the teacher to use and then implement in their lesson plans. These tools therefore equip students with the technology they need to master 21st century skills.

In a perfect world, every student would have their own computer but this may not be possible. In every classroom there should by 4-6 computers and with group work as well as individual work on the computer the students should be able to use the computer as a key learning tool.
